Maureen Stapleton tried to prepare for her role as anarchist-writer Emma Goldman in Warren Beatty's film "Reds'' by reading Goldman's autobiography.

Too boring, she said. She stopped reading, and went on to win and Academy Award for her supporting role in the 1981 film.

Stapleton, a longtime smoker who had been living in Lenox in the Berkshire hills, died on Monday from chronic pulmonary disease, according to her son, Daniel Allentuck. She was 80.
