Mom was born in Mitchell, Indiana. The family relocated to Ohio which is where she was living when my father went to work for her grandparents where she was living at the time.
Mom worked for the government during WWII, first as a messenger then winding armatures at the Air Base. She says the jobs were really interesting.
When we were little, my older and next younger brother, went with mom on a trip to the Everglades in Florida and rode on a train around the amusement park. We also went to the Dinosaur museum a couple years later in South Dakota. We lived close to Mt Rushmore.
When I was 7 my little sister was born - a little over a year after Chuckie. Chuckie was born when mom was not even close to her due date. He died the day he was 3 months old and the 2nd day he was home from the hospital.
When I was 11 we moved to Arizona where my brother John was born. I loved Arizona and was "allowed" to babysit for short periods for mom to run to the "drive-in" grocery store (they took your list at a window and filled your requests).
Then we moved to Pennsylvania where Larry had a serious accident and almost lost his left foot. He ran from a snake and slipped on glass cutting his foot almost all the way off. Earl (Jr) ran to a house for help and it was a doctor, luckily.
2 years later we moved to Oklahoma where my youngest brother David was born. I was thrilled to have been able to help my grandma drive mom to the hospital. I babysat a lot for all of my younger siblings and loved doing it.
We moved back to Ohio after my parents divorced.
Mom was living in Iowa in 1974 and ran for a political office - barely missing out on it because of residence requirements. She had also run for state representative in Washington State a couple years earlier but moved out of state before the election.
My mother wasn't anywhere near perfect but she was a very loving person. She loved all her kids with her whole being. It was excruciating to have to watch her suffer while she died of cancer but I am glad I was able to be there nonetheless.
Mom had 2 brothers and 1 sister. Johnny died at age 45, LaVerne was 18. Aunt Sarah is still living in Oklahoma. Sarah has 2 daughters and 2 grandsons along with numerous great grandchildren.
We are blessed to have known her.
