Lt. Gen. Frank E. Petersen Jr., who was the first African-American general and aviator in the U.S. Marine Corps, has died, according to his family. Petersen, who died Tuesday of lung cancer, was 83.

BALTIMORE (AP) – Frank E. Petersen Jr., the first African-American aviator and brigadier general in Marine Corps, has died.

Frank E. Petersen III says his father died Tuesday at his home in Stevensville, Maryland, of complications from lung cancer. He was 83.
