My first meeting with Joe was at Jacob Chandlers funeral home, and with Bishop Paul C. Brown of Solomon Temple Baptist Church, here in Philadelphia Pa. Mr. Chandler and Smoke (as he was affectionately called) was the best of friends. Mr. Chandler introduced me to Joe and said that I was a big fan of Muhammad Ali. Joe started to walk towards me and say, You sort of look like Ali. I backed up for fear that Joe would have a flash back. But I soon found out that Joe was a kidder. He had a laugh and a voice although coarse was very friendly. I later thought to myself, what I should have said was I don't float like a butterfly nor do I sting like a bee, please Joe Frazer don't hit me. With love and affection for this man. I thank God for allowing me to be in his presence if only for a moment in time. He will surely be missed and let it be known that it was Joe Frazier that won the Gold medal in the Olympics for the heavy weight division. May God bless his family and know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. In His Love Minister Ron Gayle Sr.

Riding down these long country roads with the oak trees hanging over with moss hanging; and my father telling me stories of how "Joe's really from around here. Joe's roots are in Yemassee and Beaufort". Feeling proud to know such a great fighter I'd seen on t.v. was really from somewhere I was now a part of. R.I.P. Smokin Joe!

Mr. Joe Frazier came through an era when all could appreciate his career in Boxing. We saw Joe at Butch Lewis' Funeral. As he left, we saw him and I said to him, "Hey Champ, Hey Joe, we love you champ, and as he was turned in the direction of my voice from a wheel chair, he waved slowly with a smile. Now that he's with the Lord in heaven, I'm glad MyRon and I had a chance go say hello. Peace & Blessings to his Family, Sorrowfully & Humbly Submitted

Smok'n Joe was a childhood sports hero of mine. Will always remmember his toughness, total lack of any fear and the famous left hook. Paid of Ali's legal fees to get his license back... never ducked an opponent. He was America's Champ in the 70's, not Ali...

I met Joe and Marvis at Fight Night in Atlanta, GA. back in the mid 90's. It was exciting, knowing that Joe would always be there, he was the Honorary Celebrity Chairman. For a fight fan there was nothing like it, meeting World Champion Boxers, promoters, trainers, referees, announcers and assorted World Class Sports Celebrities. It always seemed, when it was all over, Joe was still there signing autographs. He told me, you always have to pay your dues and take care of your fans. I'm sure he'll be busy for eternity. God Bless you, Joe. You're the GREATEST.

I was reminded of the kindness of Joe Frazier when I heard about his fight from liver cancer.
It was Thanksgiving of 1993 and my daughter was recovering from surgery on her left foot. She was 16 and her father was taking her to meet us at my uncle's home in West Oak Lane for Thanksgiving dinner. Their car broke down, it was raining and no one would stop and give them help on Lincoln Drive in Philly. Finally a black
Lincoln pulls up and out comes Joe Frazier with his cowboy hat and asks if everything was alright. He brought my daughter and her father
in his car to my uncle's for dinner that Thanksgiving! That's the kind of man Joe Frazier was, kind considerate, selfless. I thank God for his life and all he gave of himself! My prayers are with his family at this time!

I had the privilege of introducing Smokin Joe in the ring at the World Police and Fire Games in New York City this past August. He was mobbed by an adoring capacity crowd and had a smile and handshake for anyone who approached him. Introducing this great champion (in and out of the ring) was an honor I will never forget. I also got to speak to him for about 5 minutes at ringside and tell him how much I admired and respected him. He was as gracious as can be and the world has lost a truly great man. As good as he was in the ring, he was even better outside it. Gos bless you champ and rest easy. Thanks for being a true sportsman, champion and a man I have always looked up to for all of my 46 years. You were the best and will never be forgotton.

We found out that my dad had stomach cancer back in 2010 he recently passed on August 6th after his long battle. I miss my dad for I know that NO - ONE lives forever but; I thought my dad would go on and go and on for he was so strong. He had had heart trouble since 1989, triple by-pass, stents and in 2009 his main two artries were blocked 88% & 90% but his heart doctor was able to open them up by placing stents; cancer has taken him to be with the lord and our mother (his wife) and two of his older sons.
My blessings goes out to the Joe Frazier Family.

Although, by that time, I considered myself a "man of the world", I was carried back to the days when I really enjoyed boxing as boxing - not sports entertainment. He was always a hero of mine and you don't get to meet your heroes all that often. Needless to say, this seasoned professional, for those 5 minutes turned into a babbling 3rd grader.

Joe, in my opinion, is one of the greatest fighters of all time. He feared no one, and was the first to blemish the professional record of Ali. "Smokin" Joe Frazier was a former client of mine during my tenure with Merrill Lynch in New York in the 1980's. I remember meeting him in person for the first time at the Philadelphia Gym. At first, he was intimidating, then we quickly got on the same page. He shared with me what it was like fighting Muhammed Ali. My deepest sympathies go out to his family.

Joe may not have been the greatest heavyweight ever but he was the best heavyweight around for a few short years. Every time he stepped into the ring you knew it was going to be exciting. Unlike many of Ali's fights, Joe's fights were never boring. His illness was publicised so late, I hope he did not suffer and that he died peacefully. Better to live hard and die young like Joe than to live like an azzhole and die like a vegetable. Rest in Peace Joe. Don Toro Smith

Many say that the last of the three fights between Joe and Ali was the greatest. Having been at the first fight at the Garden 3/8/1971, I witnessed both men leaving the better part of themselves in that ring that night. Both spent time in the hospital; Ali three days, Joe three weeks. Neither man was the same afterwards.
As for that fight, it was in the fifth round that Ali NAILED Joe with a right then a left that would have floored a normal fighter. Joe dropped his hands , smiled at Ali , shook his head and then went to work. The fight was over at that point!
Joe, you are my favorite athele of all.
God bless you.

I am a friend of the Milton Clark family, and at first as a kid, it was for me, Joe good, Ali bad. I later got to appreciate Ali, but never forgave his public disrespect for Mr. Frazier, whether you think it was real or fake to promote.

My dad was a basketball coach at the Media Boys Club for Marvis, Wes Overholt.

And so, the Clarks, Marvis, Joe and the Media Boys Club, and Cloverlay are things to think about now.

He was more than a boxer. He was more than most of us. He was more than Foreman or Ali. He was the best role model of his profession, his city, his way of being, for kids like me. I am 53 now, so do the math and understand when and why I chose Joe when I did.

Joe was one of the finest and bravest men ever to enter the ring. He was a professional all the way and was a model for anyone dedicating his or her life to whatever hey chose to do in life. Unlike so man of today's athletes, Joe had integrity, decency and a "blame no one but myself for any failures" attitude. I met Joe in upstate New York and told him I knew a way I could beat him.I am about Duran's size.He looked at me and said "OK, let's hear this" and smiled as he knew I was kidding. I told him that I planned to have a tank at about 100 yards away, lower my guns and then, while keeping it in reverse, lob a series of shells his way."Yeah, that might do it,"he smiled with that wide smile."But what if you miss?" "That's why I keep it in reverse,Joe.Hell, even a direct hit would have you getting up and smoking mad!" He laughed and asked if I were interested to fight Ali that way."Sure, why not. But it would have to he in fast reverse". "Yeah, he's tricky, alright. But I set his feet flying in the air."

inspired people to be all they can and not give up. heart of a lion. i was 12 years old when joe won the fight of the century and his hard work ethic rubbed off.its funny how someone i never met but admired greatly has affected the direction of my life.i called my older brother today who was an ali fan to tell him of joes passing and both our voices were cracking with emotion.the first simulcast fight i ever went to was frazier/ forman, needless to say i was stunned at the results of that fight, that night felt like a party compared to today. my sincerest condolences to the frazier family.

In the "Fight of the Century", Joe quoted Ali, "You can't beat me....Don't you know I am God..." Joe Replied...."Well God... Your going to get whipped tonight." I am going to miss not knowing he is no longer with us. He was a great sportsman who supported the kids in his community.

To a skinny white Irish/Italian kid from Revere ma, you were an absolulte inspiration. My Grandfather thought you were the greatest fighter of all time. (I agree) You did not need to get out from Ali's shadow, without you, he would have been forgotten. God Bless you Joe. Put in a good word for me with the old man.......
