Condolence & Memory Journal

Mr. Mackey visited Phoenix when we hosted the superbowl. I had the privilege of driving him to the various student events and activities at various schools. I would pick him up at his hotel in the morning and spend the day with him often having dinner. I am a single mom and he shared so many stories about his family and how much he loved his wife. He was so inspiring. I shared with him a quote I had heard, "Who we are is a gift from god and what we become is our gift to god." He had never heard it before and I remember he wrote it down. He was such a spiritual giving person. I will always remember this short time I got to meet such a strong yet gentle man.

I have fond memories of watching John Mackey play. I was saddened to hear of his passing. I was fortunate to be around when he played and remember his passion for the game. Afterall, at the end of our journey, all we are left with is our memories, and thank you for those, Mr Mackey. You have alumni awaiting you.

Very saddened to hear of your battles with dementia at a young age, but after all the hits, well, football is a tough game. You were a truly gifted athlete, and an ambassador of class and respect for your sport. You will be missed.
