Condolence & Memory Journal

Mr Aiello was a total gentleman. He and my father were good friends for at least 50 years. When my dad passed away Mr. Aiello provided great comfort to my mother and me. He did and said all the right things to help us through a very difficult time. It was my honor and privilege to know Mr. Aiello.
I would like to extend my deepest condolences to his family. He was a good hearted man who will be sorely missed.
God rest his sole. Peter DiNardo III

Actor Danny Aiello will be missed by his adoring family, friends, industry colleagues and fans

He was truly an outstanding character actor. I met him on the set of Radio Days and he could not have been more kind to me...

His body of work as a professional actor showed a wide range.

But for me, to this day my favorite performance of Danny's was in thew great film, "Moonstruck"...
Danny was perfectly cast "Against Type", playing an Italian Mama's Boy as Cher's Fiance...

If you study his line readings as "Johnny Cammareri" you will see how carefully he crafted this character
using both comedy and drama, nailing key moments each and every time.

He was so perfect in this role which was such a departure from his previous character work

Danny Aiello was an inspired casting choice by the late great Film Director Norman Jewison

To: His Dear Wife Sandy, to his Children and Family we Share in your profound Sorrow....

Danny, Thank you sharing your joy of acting and your generous heart with all of us

May you Rest in Peace - Good Kind Man

With Love & Admiration

I knew since I was 5 that I wanted to be an Actor and seeing my cousin Danny was doing it made me believe my dream was possible. He was and still is a great inspiration to me. I teach Acting and use him as an inspiration. To have 4 kids, going into Acting in your late 30s does not make financial sense. But, Danny made his own way and was a natural. I loved going backstage to see him when he was on stage in Gemini, Knockout, The Floating Lightbulb and more... I love being on sets with him talking about acting, family and more. I am grateful for my relationships with Danny JR. & Ricky that came through Danny. I am grateful for Danny making the effort to see me on stage when he could. I admire that Danny was always reinventing himself and going where his passions lead him first as an Actor, Singer & Author. Danny loved people and people loved him. He was New York. I always hoped that one day wed work together. I guess now Ill have to wait to do it on stage on the other side.
I Love You Danny,

David Orange

Two-time Oscar-nominated actor Danny Aiello (Moonstruck, Do the Right Thing.) and stellar work in many other films, Broadway roles, etc. died Dec. 12, 2019, at 86.

I acted on the Broadway stage opposite Danny in 1979 for a very limited time, but the days spent around him have proved unforgettable.

The co-starring role opposite Danny in the Broadway play with a boxing theme - KNOCKOUT- was already cast. Ed ONeil of Married With Children, Modern Family TV fame, etc. playing the co-starring part of Paddy -- a menacing heavyweight boxer working out in the ring that Aiello manages, only to bully everyone until Danny has a knockdown drag-out fight with Paddy.

I was new in town, without an agent and heard that they were casting the understudy part of Paddy. In my desperation to get my first Broadway gig, I found out the name of the restaurant where Aiello had dinner every night after his theater performance.

I had never met Danny but went unannounced to his table. He was with three thug-looking guys, and I told him a la braggadocio style, like the character I wanted to portray, would say that I would be simply too much for him to handle in the ring!

Aiello, taken aback by my cocky arrogance, fired back to me: "You talk tough, but let's see how tough you really are. Come by the boxing club tomorrow at noon."

I did, and Aiello and the playwright had me spar against an amateur heavyweight boxer going pro. I barely held my own, but believable enough to play the role. After the boxing part of the audition, I had to act out a dialogue scene for the director, and he rewarded me the understudy job.

As I waited each night when I would hopefully get to perform, I noted something fascinating about Aiello that I never saw another star, before or after, do. Instead of preparing for his role in his room as Method style actor often did, or just some quiet time before hed go on stage to perform, Danny would stay out front of the theatre talking it up with theatergoers and passersby, signing autographs and whatnot. He didnt seem to tire out but rather reveled in putting on, for a lack of a better term, an improvisational show with people. Theyd talk about everything and anything until the stage manager would often have to come out to lead Danny into the theatre to hurry and get dressed for it was nearly time to perform. All the worlds a stage, Shakespeare once wrote and Danny followed that quote throughout his life.

My first performance with Aiello in the Helen Hayes Theatre before a large audience had a surprise for me after the show. The cast had left the stage, but Danny remained, talking to the theatre patrons, something seldom if ever, done by a cast member on the Broadway stage. Aiello called for me to return to the center stage where he told the audience how we only had one rehearsal together but in his assessment, my Broadway debut was outstanding.
The ovation the audience gave me brought a lump to my throat.

In 1983, I was cast again in a Broadway play-- the Tony Award-winning Best Play- TORCH SONG TRILOGY. Danny Aiello came backstage to meet the shows star, Harvey Fierstein. Danny was doggedly determined to co-star in the gay-themed musical comedy LA CAGE AUX FOLLES that Fierstein had just written the book to. Danny, a natural comedian who also had a smooth singing voice- a la crooner style akin to Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra.

I felt the urge to give Danny a huge plug- not that he needed it from me. I insisted to Harvey that Aiello indeed could sing, and draw in people to see this new, much-anticipated play, especially since he was co-starring in a new movie about to come out: Moonstruck with Cher (which Danny was Oscar-nominated for Best Supporting Actor).

Regrettably, Aiello didn't get the part in La Cage, for the show was signing on two other musical stars. I do believe Danny wouldve been great.

Years passed, and I didnt see Danny again until 1998. He was lunching with a group on the patio at his favorite restaurant near Lincoln Center on Manhattans Upper Westside. I was walking by and he shouted out, we greeted one another warmly. And once again, Danny was out to help me. He was starring in the title role of a new NYC TV series cop/private eye drama Dellaventura.

Aiello wanted me to audition with the shows producers for a guest-starring role in an upcoming episode. After my audition, Danny left a message that things for me looked good. However, bad news came days later- the Delllaventura was canceled after 14 shows. . . the episode I was being considered for never got to film. Oh, well, thats show biz.

I salute Danny Aiello-- a fun-loving showman who thrived to interact with everyone and anyone he came across-- an endearing actor that the world loved and he loved them right back. He was a truly unique force of nature.

Sorry for your great loss. Danny Aiello was not given enough credit for his great acting abilities in movies that have not been mentioned as "City Hall" with Pacino/Franciosa, and "29th St"(Should have gotten an Oscar for this) with Anthony La Paglia . His acting was as great as other Italian Actors like De Niro and Pacino....Our prayers and thoughts are with your family. Danny, a kind and gracious gentleman, used to "hold court" at various cafe's and restaurants on the upper West Side of NYC and in Hoboken, NJ. Because we had mutual acquaintances, he invited me and a two of my friends to sit down with his posse on a few occasions and converse. He told us this practice was a carry-on from time he spent in his younger days on "the stoop" in his old neighborhoods. Last time we spoke I was shaking his hand in farewell and he turned to his friend and said, "Rocco, say goodbye to Lou" and "Rocco, say goodbye to Mike." Rocco said "Goodbye, Lou." "Goodbye Mike." Danny possessed a cinematic quality we may not see again. He was a remarkable guy! RIP, Sympathy to your family.

I was truly saddened to hear the passing of the wonderful and talented Danny Aiello today. It made me cry as if it was a member of my family .

I would like to say a special thanks to Danny Aiello. My father and I adored both his movies, television & music. He was truly one of a kind. We saw him when he was filming Ruby at The Hard Rock Café in Orlando. He did not want any pictures but allowed by Uncle Pat to come up & shake his hand. My father was too nervous to say hi.

After Mr. Aiello released his first CD, I reached out to his management staff to see if my father could get a second chance to meet him after a performance. They could not have been more kind or accommodating.

Unfortunately my father would go into the hospital & pass before he could go to the show. I always appreciated the fact that he would take time to meet someone that was a fan and seemed to be a kind spirit.

The world was blessed by his performances and talent. He was truly one of the greatest actors of his generation, a great singer and I hope he is remembered that way. We played Danny's CD at my fathers wake.

My condolences go out to his family & friends. God Bless you and thank you. I hope my Dad gets a chance to say hi to you on the other side and say thanks from his entire family.

My condolences to the entire family, friends and fellow actors who worked with Mr. Aiello. He was great in every movie he was in, especially as Sgt. Phil Cantone in "Harlem Nights". Mr. Aiello will be missed by all.

I have watched Danny Aiello for many years, He looked just like my father's brother, Carmen Treffiletti and strangely enough the logic/personality portrayed was uncannily more than quite similar to my uncle. When I would watch and listen Danny it kept me in total memoranda of my uncle, seemingly always speaking from TRUE' heart felt experience that He lived and learned. I once read He worked on the Hudson River line for AMTRAK as a conductor and call out the various stops between NYC and upstate/ Corning /Poughkeepsie/ Hudson/Albany ECT. In His younger years. Going to miss His craft and the family feeling He reminded of from my father -Nino- Uncle John and Uncle Carmen, " the oldest in that order. Three Sicilan brothers only 6 years apart, in the food business together for their entire life together until death. They were infatic about Family/loyalty and respect, Danny Aiello always seemed like extended family ! Vilibate Sicily was The Treffiletti brothers original home for 7 years of their childhood. Rest in peace Mr. Aiello and thoughts and prayers to His family. The pleasures of his portrayal's on the Big Screen tell me his was even bigger in real life, that's what I always felt, just like the Treffiletti Bros. Just a viewer/friend Tony Treffiletti, proud of an Italian that more than conveyed what in the message the writer was attempting to get across. Rest in peace " Uncle Danny" gonna miss you just a lot. "Looked and spoke just like (ZIO) - "Uncle" Carmen! Anthony George Francis Treffiletti, Nino - Tony Treffiletti. Always wanted to meet you, your Italian friend. RIP Caio for now, I'll finally met you when I get there.
