If people would just take the time to research this unique generation that Miss Olsen was part of you will be utterly surprised. As a group not individually they were brave, principled, intelligent and hard workers. If I had the opportunity to listen to Miss Olsen I know I would have been memorized. To her family cherish all of the beautiful memories she left you. I offer my sincere sympathy for your loss.

Dorothy was my second "mom" from the moment I met her. I was so lucky to know the local WASP and work with them in 2003 to develop the WASP exhibit at the Seattle Museum of Flight. Dorothy contributed a lot to the exhibit. And her best friend since they went to training in 1943, Teta Corbett Thomas, contributed photos from Camp Davis, N.C. tow target WASP squadron. Sadly, Dorothy lost her best friend at 99 after she helped celebrate Dorothy's 100th birthday at McChord AFB. The passing of this "greatest generation" is profoundly sad for me. My father served in the Army Air Forces in WWII and my mother was an Army nurse during the war. With only 36 surviving WASP now, the end of an era is near. I am still trying to get the story to film in a "Band of Brothers" type miniseries. "Band of Sisters" still needs to be told.

I did not personally know Dorothy. Ever since I read The Greatest Generation, I have had so much respect and admiration for those who served our country, in so many ways, during WWII. I wish I could have met so many of these folks before they passed. Dorothy looked like such a nice person, and we are all in her debt, and so many others of her generation. Rest in Peace Dorothy. These ladies were the best of the best on the homefront, ferrying brand new fighters and bombers to points of embarkation overseas. It freed up hundreds of male combat pilots for the fight in the European and Pacific Theaters. It was a dangerous job. Many died. The National WASP WWII Museum in Sweetwater, TX honors Dorothy Olsen and her indomitable women comrades. Rest in Peace, Dorothy, Job well done. God bless you!

Soar high in the sky Dorothy. Sonia and Fred Balliet

Posted by Sonia Balliet - University Place, WA - acquaintance   July 29, 2019

I had the pleasure of meeting Dorothy shortly after her 100th birthday. She was and will always be one of my most favorite people. She had more good stories than almost everyone else I know , combined! I remember the first time I met her,she was laying out back in the sun ,with her dogs Sam,Buddy, and Lady. I was there to work in her yard..I was trying not to disturb her ,and she could sense my frustration trying to get my job done and trying to be quiet..She sits up and says "come over here"...which made me a little nervous because I had heard she was a pistol. I walked over to her and Sat down beside her in the seat she had motioned me to take. She took my hand and said "young lady, you are here to do something,so just do it!" She said make my mark ,whatever I am doing, wherever I am,do it. Without apology or permission. Somehow she knew my needed that remindermnot just on that job,but in my life .
She and I ended up being roommates for the next year, and the best of friend's. I learned more from her than i could have ever imagined. It's a real blessing to get that time with somebody ,when they have raised their kids and earned their money, and no longer stress about the things people usually stress over. She always had time to talk,to listen. .She truly appreciated the little things..hot coffee, flowers, dessert, Her dog Buddy faithful companionship. She looked forward to breakfasts with her son Kim at the pinecone cafe, messages and shopping trips with her daughter Julie. Home cooked meals from Debbie.
She would say goodnight to Harolds picture, framed on her nightstand, every night .and tell me how he would hold her hand while he was driving, weather permitting. .
She was raised catholic,so she would confess things to me before bed, just in case, she said with a smile. And when I asked her about heaven ,this is what she said...
I'm not certain of all the details, but I do believe that no matter what u wear,or who u love,or what your bank statement says,no matter the color of ur skin or vices..the only thing that matters is that you be kind. To yourself and each other. And then she would joke that she hopes they still let her in! She was one of a kind to say the least. She will be missed greatly.
I Love you Dorothy!*
