"Mean" Gene Okerlund (1942 – 2019) was the star announcer for professional wrestling for many years. He came to fame as the face of the WWE, moving later to the rival WCW, returning to the WWE for the remainder of his career. He died at the age of 76. Saw "MEAN GENE" in the late 90's in Providence and Boston, interviewing HULSTER, MACHO MAN, GOLDBERG and RODDY PIPER plus many more. What a thrill it was back then to actually see "The Greatest" interviewer in action ! Peace to all of his family and friends. oooh yeah !!

Always loved Mean Gene's sassiness on the mic when he interviewed the wrestlers, he always made us laugh when he picked on them also. He was one of the reasons we loved watching wrestling as kids and also the WWF cartoon. He was definitely a big part of our growing up days! May he rest in peace!!

Always enjoyed Gene's work from AWA, WCW and WWE. Got the pleasure of meeting him twice at WM in New Orleans 7 years ago. He was so funny and such a class act! My Grandmother enjoyed watching wrestling when I was younger. So I grew up enjoying wrestling too. I always enjoyed the interviews Mean Gene would have with various wrestlers. Jesse Ventura gave Okerlund his nickname, of Mean Gene Hot Air Machine during an interview. Gene made WWE and WCW more entertaining with his interviews. I loved watching wwf as a kid. Mean Gene always made interviews entertaining. I looked forward to Saturday nights main event and Superstars of wrestling. I saw mean gene backstage in sacramento at the memorial coliseum in the mid 80's with hulky, Adrian Adonis, big john studd and Hercules hernandez, I was a disc jockey at the time and me and big jim hall got to go back, what a thrill it was i was about 35 at the time and loved it! mean gene was the best, I loved it when hulky said "what are you gonna do when my 24 inch pythons wrap around you! or when macho man got in mean jeans face, mean jean knew how to look afraid, fearful or intimidated by guys he knew as brothers, mean jean, I will see you in at the squared circle in the sky rip chuck e luscious

Gene brightened many days for many wrestling fans and this is a sad day. He always brought his "A" game and always enjoyed his work. The passion he demonstrated and his professionalism, was second to none.

A man That came to WCW and became a true friend of everyone. He always had something good to say to everyone that he came in contact with especially with the security detail. Rest in peace Gene we will all miss you my friend. Doug Dellinger

Mean Gene was the main reason I got interested in watching the WCW as well as professional wrestling in the first place.
I believe I was in my late twenties early thirties when I first started watching wrestling.
Mean Gene Okerlund, brought it to life with, the witty things he would say.
