Richard Goodwin

Speechwriter crafted LBJ's historic "we shall overcome" speech…

NEW YORK (AP) — Richard N. Goodwin, an aide, speechwriter and liberal force for the Kennedys and Lyndon Johnson who helped craft such historic addresses as Robert Kennedy's "ripples of hope" and LBJ's speeches on civil rights and "The Great Society," died Sunday evening. He was 86. For full obituary from, click here.

Condolence & Memory Journal

When attending my freshman year in college in 1967, growing up in a middle class northern suburb of Chicago, I came across RFK's "To Seek A Better Newer World." From not knowing more than who was president at the time, or that Ted and Edward Kennedy was the same guy, this book was the start of a whole new world of knowledge in politics, government and history. Throughout ensuing years, Richard Goodwin became a huge hero of mine who, unfortunately, was 'below the radar' of the average citizen. Yet it was the works of his literary genius that help escalate the speeches of RFK and LBJ to historical significance. I haven't seen another the likes of Richard since. You were the best!

Dear Doris and family:
What a life! Parting can be agonizing but what a blessing Dick's life was for our country and for all who knew him. It was a privilege always to be in his company. And fun too! Our deepest condolences.

This brilliant man is a very real thread in America's historical fabric -- that so few knew of -- relative to his import. Read his books, such as Remembering America. I'm a conservative, through and through, and loved his work through and through...that should say enough. Rest in Peace Dick Goodwin.

Richard N. Goodwin gave much to us all. Thank you.

In thinking about Richard and as author and political advisor and to so much he shared with us, I recollect Leigh Hunt's essay, "My Books" :

"How pleasant it is to reflect that all those lovers of books have themselves become books"

Kindly read on....knowing as I do, what a treasure is the possession of a friend's mind when he is no more"

Richard is in the loving embrace of the Lord. God Bless his family and all of us...

Richard has inspired many more behind him. Even my 19 year old knew of him, his political activism and his thoughtful and thought provoking writings and speeches. As a parent I am grateful that someone such as Richard has inspired our youth to go forward with care and concern for others in this world and do great things.

A man of integrity
How wonderful it must have been to share your life with such a man
To share your life with someone who understood the power of the pen
May you continue to remember the love of your heart
May friends and family embrace each other during this time
And share memories that make you smile
My prayers are with you
