Condolence & Memory Journal

My late husband and I had the greatest pleasure to sit with Senator Akaka many years ago at the Okinawan Kai in Washington. We shared many stories and took several pictures together including his lovely wife Milly. It was such a happy occasion.
We received a beautiful letter from Senator Akaka telling us how pleased he was to receive copies of the pictures.
I am saddened at the loss of such a lovely man who dedicated his life for all of us.
And,send my condolences to the family of Senator Akaka who was such a caring man.

A HERO TO ALL ~

We sincerely convey our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Mary "Aunty Millie" Akaka, Millannie Mattson, Daniel Jr, Dr. Gerard, Alan, Nicholas, and the entire Akaka family on the passing of Senator Daniel Kahikila Akaka, a highly respected gentleman, much beloved by all, whose life exemplified great compassion, serving our nation with noble devotion for 36 years from January 3, 1977 to January 3, 2013.

We are truly grateful to Senator Akaka for successfully sponsoring legislation in 1996 that led to the re-evaluation and upgrade of Medals of Honor awarded on June 21, 2000 to 21 World War II Asian-American Nisei soldiers of the 100th Infantry Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Senator Akaka's service and life has made a lasting impact on our citizens and he will always be remembered as a great humanitarian. His presence will be missed very, very much.

May God bestow His abundant blessings and perfect peace on the entire Akaka family who mourn the passing of their beloved patriarch.

Me Ke Aloha Pumehana,

Nearly every time we perform we sing the Hawaiian Lullably and remember that he loved and sang that song. The first line is Where I live .... Upon hearing a recording I see that Uncle Daniel sang it as Where WE live....
Now we will follow his legacy of inclusion... the true Aloha spirit by singing the song in this way. A beautiful person

I was lucky enough to visit Senator Akaka in DC when I worked for the media. I watched him as he chaired his committee. I saw his powerful side and his loving side. He is one of the most incredible men I have ever met. When I ran into him around the Islands I would approach giving him my name because I didn't think he would remember. He would reply "I know" He would press his forehead against mine and take a breath, followed with a kiss. Reporters from the mainland would be shocked that a US Senator would greet a nobody in such a manner. That is just who he was. When my 7 yr old Great niece was murdered, he pressed the FBI to rush DNA results so my family would not suffer too long. He cared about his people as much as we cared for him. Mahalo Senator for your hard work and Aloha. You will be missed so very much.

My mom had the Honor and privilege to work with a gentleman of a true Hawaiian. He led a life with honor and respect in addition with the Hawaiian heart and spirit. Yes he was the true Aloha and no one will ever come close to that. He is one of a kind with the leadership that exemplify the true Hawaiian and one that our Kings and Queens will always smile upon and be forever grateful. As the song says "There will never be another kanaka like him" I would like to thank the family of Senator Akaka for sharing a blessing with all Hawaii.
He proudly stands along side with all Hawaii Royalties, Senator Inouye, Senator Matsunaga, Representative Patsy Mink. Love and God Bless all his family.
"ALOHA NUI LOA" to you all.
