Today I was reading Life's Reflections written by Tommy Hawkins and Petting the beast that is never tame.

Mr. Hawkins spoke at Rotary of Sierra Madre several years ago. I treasure his book of poetry for the people because it is so.

I have been a fan of Mr. Hawkins my adult life when I began listening to KABC. He was always an inspiration, great humor and much admired.

It was great to see him at the Dodger games, too. He was friendly and made himself available to the crowd.

I feel as though he was always a part of my life and his influence has made a difference in mine.

Dear Doris,
I was so sorry to hear about Tommy. We go way back to Parker High School, when I was a cheerleader, and Tommy was a player. And...what a great player he was. Shortly after we moved to California, we went to a Laker game to see if we could meet you and Tommy. My husband and I did, and you invited us over to your house afterwards. What a wonderful memory. Our condolences go out to you and the family.

Wow, seems just like yesterday he was playing against my Michigan State Spartans. Anywhere close to the hoop and he was a monster. He was scary with his fierceness and unbelievable leaping ability. I've nothing but respect for Tom the player and also the person. We need more Tommy Hawkins in baskerball these days. What a credit to all the schools he attended, the NBA, and the humanity. He will be missed greatly. Prayers go out to all of his family and for his memory.

I remember during the 1959 season Tom gave me many rides home from Laker basketball games. They were played at the Armory in downtown Minneapolis. Sometimes there were several of us kids but he always made sure all us got a ride. A real gentleman sorry to hear of his passing.

To the Hawkins Family:

I had the honor and privilege of knowing Tommy Hawkins since 1980, when I served as Sports Information Director at UC Riverside. Tommy took up our cause when we were sent packing for an NCAA basketball playoff fame in Alabama, due to our not having a large enough facility.

When I left UCR in 1983, Tommy went on his KABC Sportstalk show and paid tribute to me and I still have the tape of that. A very memorable moment that was unrehearsed.

Tommy was a good man who perhaps related to me, because like him I was born and raised in Chicago. He also shared his love of Jazz with me.

I last saw Tommy in Cincinnati at his son Kevin's wedding and the conversation between us will remain etched in my mind.

My sincere condolences to you all.

It was an honor to have played two years with Tom at Notre Dame. He was one of the finest men I have ever had the pleasure of calling a friend. I was present when Tom was inducted in the Notre Dame "Ring of Honor". In my opinion, he should have been the first inductee. My memory of Tom was always that he was a class act and a credit to our alma mater.

To Kevin and the family, i send my condolences. He was the Best.
