Condolence & Memory Journal

So very sorry to just be learning this sad news. His Politics and Mass Media class was amazing and his influence has stayed with me these many years later. I was fortunate enough to be in his first class at George Mason. He was such a wonderful person and professor, had an amazing mind and used it to impact America and accomplish so much good. He was a warm and supportive mentor. My heart goes out to his wonderful wife and family. I hope that your wonderful memories will help to keep him close and ease your loss.

Roger and I met at Creston High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We reconnected 60 years later via email and he was the most amazing person I have ever known. His humor, his caring for all - endless love - understanding - what a wonderful person - my love to his family who were so important to him. Margaret Walsh in Arizona

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Roger's family on his death. Roger was an exceptional person who had tremendous impact on those lucky enough to know him. When I was a freshman at the University of Michigan in 1953, Roger was my Residence Advisor in my Dorm. He was a Michigan Law student at the time, and his warmth, judgment, values, and humor, made him a special friend. My heart goes out to his family, some of whom I had the privledge of knowing when he was living and working in New York City.

I was so saddened to hear of the passing of Roger Wilkins. I saw him often around the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, DC, and also worked with him during his service on the DC Board of Education. He had a unique place in modern American history, with his contributions to the LBJ Admin, journalism and other service. Blessings to your family, may you find comfort in his memory.

Let us who knew Roger as he so articulately expressed to a Columbia Professor of Law "before I was formed" may we express appreciation for his life, which he lived fully, for his talent, for his integrity. His voice was an important voice, it was an important Candle, which was important to be lit "rather than curse the darkness." May he, his parents, rest in peace. May his family, his children and his talented wife whom I have not had an opportunity to me be consoled in this time of loss. America E. I arrived in DC an uneducated but young enough to learn from people who saw potential especially indefatigable Roger. He inspired me to tackle playwriting and journalism and kept reminding me that poor folks have the same learning curve as the privileged. When I landed in the dictation room at WAPO he said Raspberry and Bradley put their underpants on one foot at a time. Thanks Roger. It worked just the way you said.

Although my heart is heavy with this sad news, I'm so thankful that I was able to learn so much about the political process in Politics and Mass Media at George Mason University (GMU) through him. This class was mandatory for my Communications Degree and at the time, I had little knowledge of the poltiical arena and thought "there goes my GPA". Needless to say, I got an A due to his rousing, knowledgeable lectures (I kept all the text books from his class). In my last position at the Campaign for America's Future (CAF), I was thrilled when I found out he was a member of the Board of Directors at that time. And because of Professor Wilkins, I met Barack Obama when he was a Senator. An amazing and inspiring man who will truly be missed by me and many others. My sincere and heartfelt condolences to Patricia and family.
