Hot Chocolate singer dies at 71

LONDON (AP) — Errol Brown, the lead singer of the band Hot Chocolate, has died in the Bahamas, his manager said Wednesday. He was 71.
Manager Phil Dale said the singer, best known for hits "You Sexy Thing" and "It Started With A Kiss," died earlier Wednesday of liver cancer. Dale said Brown's death had come as a surprise.
"(Brown) had been poorly over the past few months but he never discussed it," Dale said. "He'd be sadly missed by his friends and family. He was an extremely good personal friend."
Brown moved to Britain from Jamaica with his mother at age 12. In 2003, he was honored by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to pop music and made a Member of the Order of the British Empire.
Hot Chocolate released their first record "Love is Life" in 1970, and enjoyed numerous chart hits in the 1970s. In 1981, they played at a pre-wedding party for Prince Charles and Lady Diana in Buckingham Palace.
Brown is survived by his wife, Ginette, and two daughters.

To Errol's wife and daughters, you had a lovely dad as evident by the way you all are such genuine sincere people. I grieve with you all and hope as time goes by it will be easier for you, gone but never forgotten and you all are a little piece of him left on this earth. Now you have another angel looking out for you up there. With love and wishes of peace of mind to you all.

My sincere condolences to Ginette and Errol's two beautiful daughters. May the Lord comfort your hearts, keep and sustain you. I've enjoyed the music of Hot Chocolate over the years. "Love is Life", "Emma", "A Child's Prayer", "The Street",.....amongst others were my favorites back then!

A fantastic artist of stage and studio, who captured great social meaning in many of his songs, such as the wickedness of Rumours, the two way racism of Brother Louie and the much forgotten Mindless Boogie about the Jonestown massacre. A true pop-funk-soul legend!!

The world of music has lost an icon but will never be forgotten and will always command a special place in my heart. His inimitable style of music and vocals over the years with such greats as 'You sexy thing' sure to fill any dance-floor, 'Everyone's a winner', 'It started with a kiss', 'So you win again' and 'I'll put you together again', to mention but a few of the upbeat funky tunes and soulful ballads. I too had the pleasure of seeing Errol Brown perform his very last show on his 2009 tour at the Symphony Hall, Birmingham and many more before that as a solo artist and with Hot Chocolate. Not one song that I do not have in my collection. I had the great pleasure of meeting Errol on 10th November 2000 after a show at Sheffield City Hall, what a guy, it was very humbling. The news of Errol's passing was total shock and disbelief, it has left an irreparable hole in my world of music, but his music will live on through generations. Thank you Errol and God bless. I have loved Errol since I first heard Brother Louie in 1973. I have met him on a few occasions, the last time after his Farewell concert at The Sage in Gateshead. He was a beautiful man and was always so friendly and polite. A real gentleman. People I haven't spoken to in years have been in touch to offer their condolences. Everyone knows how much I worshipped him. The world will be a sad place without him but he will always be in my heart. RIP Errol You Sexy Thing XX

Errol provided the soundtrack to my life growing up and great nights enjoying life dancing in disco's. My family and I loved him and his fantastic voice and music. My sister and I always remembered how charismatic, friendly and gorgeous he was when we happened to be in Liberty's Nightclub in Birmingham once when he was there relaxing with a group of friends. We have seen him several times and were especially fortunate to enjoy his last performance on his Farewell Tour in 2009 at The Symphony Hall Birmingham when he sang beautifully and made an emotional farewell on stage with his wife and two daughters. Feeling really sad at his loss. RIP Errol and thank you so much for your fabulous music and all the memories xxx
